The Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center (SILC) is a National Science Foundation Science of Learning Center. SILC brings together scientists and educators from many different institutions to pursue the overarching goals of understanding spatial learning and using this knowledge to develop programs and technologies that will transform educational practice, helping learners to develop the skills required to compete in a global economy.

The Language Development Project has received funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development since 2002. This program project is a longitudinal study on the development of language and gesture in typically developing children and in children with early brain injury. Participating families are visited three times a year in their homes, beginning at 14 months.

Getting on Track Early for School Success seeks to clarify instructional goals for early language, mathematics, and academic development in preschool settings, by providing teachers with frequent objective, accurate and valid assessments of children’s skills in these domains, and thereby enabling teachers and researchers to develop powerful instructional strategies to foster these skills. The project has developed statistically reliable pre-K literacy and mathematics assessments. These assessments will serve as the core of a coherent system of instruction that begins in pre-K and reliably enables children of all backgrounds to attain high levels of academic achievement by grade 3.

The Center for Early Childhood Research is a consortium of child development laboratories at University of Chicago. The CECR conducts cutting edge research exploring the development of cognition, action, and perception in the first few years of life. The researchers in the Center use innovative and varied methods to investigate the early development of critical abilities, including language, social understanding, mathematical and spatial abilities, higher order thinking skills, empathy, and moral reasoning.
